Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons is a man of many surprises. A CPA by training,
the
GoDaddy.com executive started his first multi-million-dollar
company in 1984, creating personal accounting software in his basement. By the time
he sold Parsons Technology 10 years later, the company had 100 employees, more than
100 products, three million customers and $100 million in annual revenue.
Not one to rest on his laurels, the
Go Daddy CEO
got to work on a new start-up a year later.
Although the company we now know as Go Daddy was founded in 1997, it wasn't until
2000 that it became an ICANN-accredited domain registrar.
Bob used some of the same tactics in building Go Daddy that he'd used to great success
with Parsons Technology. Again, his company offered high-quality, low-cost ways
for people to do it themselves - only this time they weren't filing their taxes
or balancing their checkbooks, they were getting on the Internet.
Up till then, creating a Web presence had been a complicated and expensive task,
one that required the services of Web consultants, writers, graphic designers and
programmers. With Go Daddy's quick domain registration process and easy-to-use site
builder, getting on the Internet became a do-it-yourself project that just about
anyone can handle. Bob completed the picture by assembling the best customer support
operation in the
domain industry. The result? Another slam dunk.
Once Go Daddy hit its stride, the company began to invest in celebrity spokespeople.
These began with WWE star Candice Michelle - who starred in Go Daddy's first ever
Super Bowl commercial - followed by IndyCar star Danica Patrick.
These two were soon joined by pro football player Chad Johnson and NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Often hailed as a marketing genius, Bob is best known for his outrageous and controversial
commercials that are always just a little too edgy for Network censors. But there's
no arguing with the results. His
2008 Super Bowl commercial drove 1.5 million viewers to their
computers to watch a commercial featuring Danica Patrick. Pretty slick for a guy
with a degree in accounting!
Today, Go Daddy has 5.5 million customers and is the world's largest domain registrar
and hostname provider. Headquartered in Arizona, the company has more than 2,000
employees in eight locations.
